A Glittering Night at the ASBOs

The Aberdour Short Brilliant Original Film Awards

What's It All About?

The idea is to encourage people of all ages to make their own movie, regardless of technical ability or previous experience.

You Can Either:

Submit a short film which will be considered for screening at the Aberdour Festival Film Night. The event will be held in the marquee on Silversands Beach on the evening of Monday 2nd August 2010

Films demonstrating original and entertaining ideas will stand the best chance of being selected, so you won't need a production crew with sound and lighting technicians - all you will need is a basic movie phone/camera, a good idea and a set of batteries.

The makers of the selected films will be invited to attend the screening which will take the form of an award ceremony. The films will be nominated for an "ASBO" in various categories, so bear this in mind when considering how to bring your ideas to life.

Or:

Let us know if you would like to produce a short commercial for a local business - there are six up for grabs and all will be screened on the night with an ASBO for the best one. For more details contacts:

What Kind of film Can I Make?

Films may be in any style, with or without soundtrack, actors, plot, dialogue etc but should be original and entertaining. Films which feature "accidental" mishaps are unlikely to be considered and should be submitted to the usual TV programmes specialising in the genre.

Films containing images, language or themes inappropriate to a family themed evening will not be considered for screening.

What length of film can I make?

Films should be no longer than six minutes in length.

When does my film have to be submitted?

Films should be submitted by Wednesday 14th July 2010.

It would help us if you could submit your film earlier (as soon as it is finished.)

Which category awards are up for grabs?

Any legal type things?

Films should only feature persons who have consented to appear (responsibility for compliance will rest with the maker).

Original ideas (intellectual copyright) will remain the property of the maker who should take any necessary steps he or she feels appropriate to protect the copyright prior to submission..

Anything else?

Films selected for screening are to premiered on the film night and must not have been previously shared or posted on the internet.

My Camera does not do sound or the sound is poor.

Colin Mackenzie at the ShantyShack studio in Aberdour is organising the event and he will be happy to help on this one.

What about editing?

Many computers have a movie editing suite as standard e.g. Windows Movie Maker - have a look under programmes - you might have it and not know. They are very easy to use and you can join clips together, insert credits and effects, apply a sound track etc.

I've made my movie - now what do I do?

1. Make sure it is playable using Window Media Player. Again, Colin can help if you need to convert the format.

2. Attach details as follows Name, address and tel no of film maker Names of others involved and what they did. Don't forget to keep a back-up as no responsibility can be accepted by the Festival for loss or damage.

3. Burn it to a DVD disc and send it to Colin at:

What happens if my film is selected?

You will be invited to come along with your crew and enjoy the night. You will have a reserved table right in the front. You will need best frocks/black ties - Oh - and an acceptance speech just in case!

What happens if my film is not selected?

We may show some of the unselected entries on the night but in any case we hope that you will come along and enjoy the night.

Remember: This is a fun project and is aimed at first time film makers

If you have: a mobile phone or a still camera with movie facility or camcorder and a good imagination
